The Trenches The trenches is both a place and a job description. Traders who live there chase tokens that may be seconds old, against bots, insiders, and thousands of other degens, in a market where most coins go to zero.
The phrase borrows First World War imagery and older crypto hardship slang. By the 2023–2024 Solana meme season it meant one thing: the on-chain battlefield of fresh launches, rugs, and overnight folklore.
Origin
Before it meant pump.fun specifically, “in the trenches” was generic crypto talk for grinding through hard markets. Glossaries and CT threads gradually pinned it to newly launched meme tokens.
The January 2024 launch of one-click Solana launchpads industrialized that battlefield. Suddenly anyone could deploy a coin, and the phrase stuck as identity: trenchers, trench soldiers, degens.
Spread
Telegram raid chats, X spaces, and livestreams turned trench life into content. Screenshots of nuked portfolios became badges of honor; “we are so back” and “it’s over” could describe the same token ten minutes apart.
Metas — animal coins, celebrity coins, AI agents — sweep through every few weeks. Spotting the next narrative early is treated as the core skill of trench culture.
Notable developments
Bonding-curve launchpads made creation cheap and graduation rare. Studies of millions of launches found the overwhelming majority never sustain liquidity.
Even after volume winters, the trenches tend to revive — the same way internet memes die publicly and return under a new name.
